Hi, I am 27 and I have been having severe right sided abdominal pain for about 6 months now. When I have the attacks, I begin vomiting and have to take meds. I always have a dull pain in the area and stay really weak and short of breath. I been to the doctors and all they can tell me is that my liver enzymes are sky high. They thought it was my gallbladder so I had an upper gi, ultrasound, hida scan, cat scan and mri. Everything was normal. I could not believe it. They tell me something is wrong with my liver and that is why the blood work is so high. I was wondering if something else could cause my liver enzymes to go up. They also checked me for hepatitis and it came back normal. The Emergency room in town has seen me sooo much and sometimes a couple times a week that they are beginning to think I am faking I think. I can go weeks pain free and then it hits and I can't move, I can't breathe, I have to go to the ER for a shot to relieve the pain. It is agonizing. Now they have referred me to more specialist in the GI and liver department 3 hours away at a charity hospital. That is going to be very expensive doctor visits since I have to have alot of gas to go back and forth a few times a month. I am not looking forward to that. Please help. If you have had any of my symptoms and can give me some advice of what it could possibly be I would be soo grateful so I can ask the doctor when I go back to him.
I agree that you should see a liver specialist. I had the same symptoms and it took two years for them to diagnose me with autoimmune hepatitis (AIH). Its not a very common thing and so you might have a doc that is not familiar with it. After I was diagnosed I had to explain AIH to my pcp. It is also sometimes referred to as Lupoid Hepatitis. It is similar to lupus, but only effects the liver. They may also need to rule out Lupus first.
GOOD LUCK!
let us know what happens
I had elavated liver enzymes for years until i took gluten out of my diet. For me it turned out i had celiac disease and no doctors ever look for it. Liver enzymes are back to nromal after 1 yr gluten free. But i agree with everyone else and seek the help of a specialist.
And all medications can potentially harm your liver. Everyones bodies react differently to meds. But yes, people dont realize that even over-the-counter medications can cause serious damage.
Tell your doctor to check you for hemochromatosis.Thats what my dad has.Good luck. rose227
Hello there, Yep, I had a liver tx., I had it in 2006. The doctors said it was from over use of acetaminophen. What scares me about that is I hardly ever used it. Some doctors in the midwest are trying to have it banned. They say it isn't safe. I can believe that...I'am an example. I 'am doing well tho. I do try to tell as many people as I can about my situation, because most people think it (Tylenol) is safe. Pass the word! Thanks for asking.
I agree completely with Kande. I would see a liver specialist asap...I had all high ast/alt numbers and finally got sent to a liver specialist who diagnosed me w/autoimmune hepatitis. But I feel the liver specialist knew more then any of the other Dr's that were treating me....
Kande...You had a liver transplant? How long ago and when? What do you have?
Hello, I would go see a Hepatologist (liver specialist), since it sounds like most of your problems are there. I wouldn't drink until you see the doctor either, it could cause more problems. Trust me, see the hepatologist, I put off seeing one and ended up having a liver transplant. Had I went earlier, I probably wouldn't have! Take care.
