BBT - How to do it

I found this post of Latrice.  She really is a temping pro.

"hello ladies, here is the quick version of taking your temp.

Some people use the BBT therms and some use a regualar one.  The BBT therm gives your temp in a number like this 98.12  I use a regular therm.

The object of taking the temp is to take it when your body is at a resting state, that means you need 4-5 hours of uninterrupted sleep, so if you no your going to be waking up in the middle of the night to pee, its not worth it to take the temp

Consistency is a key thing, take it the same time everyday, under the same side of the tongue. Do not go pee first or get out of bed.  I keep mine under my pillow next to cell phone to use as a light lol  If you every get temps where your temps is all over the place, its probably bcuz you were taking the temp at different times or didnt get enough sleep or consumed some alcohol(alot) or might b sick.  As i stated, if you take your temp at noon, its going to be high bcuz your body is no longer in a resting state, so dont rely on those types of temps.

If you miss a day, dont just put in a number leave it blank, lieing will not help you understand the chart.

Even if you take your temp 2 hours later, you will notice a temp difference, bcuz once you are awake, your body is no longer at a resting state and your brain is working, activity causes your temp to increase.  After doing this for a month, you should no what your baseline is the temp during the non ovualtion period. So when your temp jumps up from your baseline, you will be entering the ovulation phase of temps which should be higher than your baseline, normally in the 98's. It should stay high threw the duration of your L.Phase 12-14 days(thats another way to detect if you have a L.Phase defect) if your temps dont stay high for 12-14 days there is a problem with possibly the progesterone levels, progesterone levels increase during ovulation which causes your temp to increase, and when the levels go down, your temp goes down and it brings on the onset of your cycle.

What you are looking for is a temperature shift of at least .4 degrees over a 48-hour period to indicate ovulation. This shift should be above the highest temperatures in the previous six days

progesterone is responsible for increase of temps and decrease of temps and the onset of your cycle

Med help has a bbt tracker,  after 1cycle/month it will draw your coverline/baseline for you.  It will draw a line indicating your ovulation, and after 3 cycles it will give you and estimate of your cycles ,fertile time etc."

Just as a side note you can get a BBT therm at Wal-Mart for around $8.  It has memory, so you don't have to record it as soon as you take it.

Thank you for posting this!  It's really interesting, I know know what my problem was, I always took my temp after getting up and peeing because if I leave it on my night stand my son will take it away from me!

Thanks Bridgette, had to read the post a few times for it to penetrate my decreasing grey matter lol.  I was going to use my digital thermometer but think i'll look around for a BBT one, no idea if the one I have is one or not as I've thrown the box away!  I wake during the night about the same time everynight so that would be a good time for me to take it.

Bumping for Bernie.

I would also like to make a comment about the original post.   If you are new to BBT, I strongly recommend using a BBT thermometer.  I just went and bought a new one a couple of weeks ago, because I was convinced my battery was dying . . . anyway I was wondering "why" you have to use the special thermometer, because the regular ones are just a tad cheaper.  Here is why:

"Most digital thermometers are accurate within 2/10ths of a degree.  This means a 98.6F reading is still considered accurate, although the temperature may actually be 98.4F or 98.8F.  A BBT thermometer is accurate within 1/10th of a degree to better interpret even the slightest fluctuation in temperature.  Readings are displayed to a 100th of a degree (98.65F) for added accuracy and assurance."

Progesterone is the warming hormone, so yes that would make sense why your post-O temps are lower this cycle.

Progesterone supplements are completly out of my realm of research, but I hope there are other ladies here who could answer your question.

Feel free to jump on our cycle buddies thread, if you would like.  I start a new thread every weekend - so sometime today I'll update everyone.

This TOTALLY answered my question that I had since yesterday!!!  Last month my temps got pretty high & stayed that way for a bit (thought I was pg, shoot darn-it ;) Anyway, my progesterone level was high @ just over 40 6 days post O.
This month is the FIRST time Ever I cannot pinpoint (by all the usual signs) WHEN I O'd! I was on clomid, so that just through some of the signs out the window for me, but I suspected I had O'd & the next morning my temps went from 97.5 to 98.1 & has only raised to 98.2 . I am NOT on pog. supp.'s this month & I was wondering if MAYBE this is why my BBT is lower than last month???
INTERESTING!  My new RE said I didn't need the supp.'s, but prescribe them for me IF i wanted them.  I have about a week supply & I am wondering IF I should go ahead & begin to use them?!?!?!
I have natural progesterone cream, & my"plan" is to use this (started last night) & get my levels checked @ 6DPS to see where my level is & if its not @ least a 12 then I'll start the progesterone supp. cuz "if" conception has occure, most likely implantation would not happen for another day or two.
What do you ladies think??????

PS  Thanks bamy girls ;)

YAY - I'm excited for you!!  I can't wait to see what the temps reveal.  Just remember, they're meant to be looked at in hindsight.  You'll drive yourself batty if you try to interpret them before you see the big picture.

I mentioned the fung shui book in the CB thread.  It also has one small page on colors that you should wear to effect different things.  Looks like green might be a good one during O time :)  I'm seriously considering getting some green pj's - LOL

Ok, so I just got a thermometer. They didn't have any BBT thermometers, so I just got a fast regular one with memory. I'll start charting and temping in the morning. I'm excited :)

Thanks Bridgette :) I'm getting a thermometer tomorrow and I'll start charting on Monday. :) DH really wants to get to the bottom of all of this, too. It's so cute he's even looking up things I can "wear" to increase my fertility. He found this necklace that he wants to get me, lol!

That's great! I am really going to start temping. Can I start now, does it matter that I am already 5 days into my cycle?
