Cribs

I was doing some research because me and my hubby are trying to concieve (conceive). I looked at a forum that had lists of things that parents used, didnt use and was useless. There were about 20 Moms on this board and all of them said the crib was useless. What do you put them to sleep in if you dont use a crib. We have to keep the baby in his own room because we have cats and need to be able to isolate him from the cats and if we close our bedroom door the cats will meow all night and no one will get any sleep. If I dont need to spend the money on a crib then thats great but what do I buy to replace it. There are bassenets but they only last like three months right? Kinda of confused anyone have any advice

I too would like to hear the alternative to not using a crib.  I used one with my first. Very successful with it.  Never crawled out.  Avoid Storkcraft model as every crib between 2000-2008 has been recalled (just to be on the safe side).  I used a bassinet beside the bed for 2 months and then transfered to the crib.  My sister however, had Anden in the crib right from day 1.

i think most people who said to avoid cribs were co-sleepers- they had their babies in their beds with them. I also know a few people who keep the baby in their room in a pack n play for convenience.
My daughter was next to me in a bassinet for 6 months (small baby who never rolled in her sleep so she fit for a long time). Then she moved to the pack n play in our room until about 8 months. at 8 months she moved in to her own room into her crib.

if the baby will be in his/her own room, I cannot think of any safe alternative to a crib.

since you have a lot of time, you may want to consider training your cats now before you have kids. Most people do keep the baby in their room at least in the beginning for convenience. Most newborns wake up VERY frequently in the night to eat. Mine was up every 2-3 hours. My tired butt was not going across the hall each time the baby needed me :)
I also wanted to mention that unless you have a reason to be concerned about your cats, chances are you won't have to worry about them. Are they overly-aggressive or overly-friendly? I have 2 cats who sleep in our room and never went near the baby while she was in there.
