My baby girl is 6 months.  We fed her Gerber Rice cereal mixed with formula at 4 months.  You can mix it with breast milk if he is nursing.  Make it very thin.  The directions on baby's first feeding is on the box.  This is what the doctor told us to do and what it says in the book What to Expect the First Year.  Start giving 1 to 2 tablespoons a day then go up to 6 per day.  When baby is 6 months then start on green beans then peas.

I started with my daughter at around 5.5  - 6 months, that's what our paediatrician recommended to us, and the first thing I offered her was self-made carrot puree. As mentioned above, some start on rice cereal mixed with formula or breast milk.

the american acadamy of pediactrics now says what the WHO has said for years! No food but formula or breasmilk till baby is 6 month and until a year formula and breasmilk should be the main food for baby! Baby food should never be suplimented for baby food and if they are eating less formula or breasmilk then they are eating too much food.

Cereal sepecially baby cereal with forfified iron is not a good food at all for baby. breasfed babies get enough iron from moms milk and formula fed babies get fortified in their milk also. Too much iron can make baby be mroe seceptible to colds and illness.

Sweet Potatoes followed by avacado are the least allergenic and most healthy for baby. Bake the sweet potato in the oven till squishy soft and scrap out and mix in a food processesor or blender with some water or breastmilk. Avacado is alrady soft and you just scap out and blend.

Veggies and plain fruits should be given first one week at a time for each one to see if any allergies pop up, then once they ahve had each one you can mix them up.

up to 2 tablespoons once a day till age 9 months then up to 4 tablespoons of food and at a year they can have 2 tablespoons of food to 4 three times a day and 2 snacks a day along with thier milk.

Around 8-10 months they will learn the thumb and finger pinching reflex and no longer have to have their food purred and can have it as long as it turns to mush in theri mouths and they do not ahve to chew. Like sweet potatoes in small pieces to pick up after cooked. It is about learning texture and how to eat before a year not about nutrician!

Feeding baby foods ealier can lead to heart dieseas and diabetes and many other health issues later in life and childhhod, obesity adn most of all digestive issues and allergies. A babies digestive tract is nto ready for any food befoer the time they are able to sit up on their own! That is when the digestive muscles are good for foods! NOt until then!

I never gave my babies baby food. I gave them people food mushed and appropriate for babies. They got their first food at six months when I introduced them to cow's milk by putting a very small quantity in their drinking water. What happens if you lose your milk? Best be prepared.

I agree with the recommendations of 30something13, although I included some foods that are currently out of fashion, such as honey and egg yolk (which I used with cow's milk to make a very soft custard). That's OK. They will be back in fashion eventually.

All baby food is really is adult food mashed up or pureed. I don't think it matters what food you start with, I started with rice cereal that was fortified with dha and omega 3's. And sweet potatoes. Lol one of my favorite books is Baby 411, it has a list in there of Stage 1 foods and Stage 2 foods and etc. And if you lose your milk you give formula not cows milk. You can start with any stage one foods. But peas and green beans aren't the best to start with, cuz they aren't as sweet. Lol

I think all babies are different as far as when breast milk or formula is no longer enough. My son was 4 months when he started food. I started out wih the cereal mixed with breast milk and next with peas and beans. The peas are plenty sweet and you don't want to start out with too many sweets or your baby will not want the veggies and plainer foods you offer later. All babies eat and grow differently,  and your pediatrician will help you with your decisions but ultimately I think mom knows best if baby is satisfied with heir hunger. Good luck (:

I agree all babies are different and what you usually do with one you will likely have to do something different with the other.  They have different needs and personalities.  Our first son ate lots of mashed up carrots and apples that we mixed together.  He also enjoyed pears too.  As he got older he like mashed up bananas with peanut butter (we made sure he was not allergic and he was over a year old).

Our second son he was more energetic and less cautious.  He started eating banana rice cereal at about 4 months along with breastfeeding.  So I just always kind of play it by ear and just experiment with healthy foods.  Mashed up sweet potatoes and avocados that were suggested earlier are very good ideas too.  Be sure to let us know what works for you.

Whatever you and your doctor decide, please go slowly and watch for any type of allergic reactions .. even such things as eczema can be food-related.

Just wanted to add to what ChitChatNine said too, allergic reactions can pop up in weird places.  Our younger son always got a rash on his bum when something bothered him.  I would think it was diaper rash but then every time we gave him the same food it would occur, so keep an eye out for the belly and the bum or even cheeks too.

Let us know what you found that works best for your little one :D
