First of all, don't panic, you don't have to have all that much in place when the baby comes home, just some key things.  Going shopping for this or that with your baby gives you something to do in the first weeks with the baby there.  (I was watching one of those bringing-home-the-baby shows on TV, and the pregnant woman says to her husband in a panic, "We haven't finished babyproofing the kitchen!" as though they were going to bring home the three-day-old infant and he was going to crawl to the knife drawer and open it and pull some out.)

Absolutely you need a car seat, right for infants, or the hospital literally won't let you take the baby home (at least in some states).

You need lots of diapers, in the little size.  If you're going with cloth, you'll also need wraps for them.  Wipes are very nice.  You can use washcloths and warm, soapy water instead, if you don't mind lots of laundry.  I also liked the big-sized incontinence pads that they sell in the Depends area of the store.  They are about two feet by two and a half feet and rather thin (not like a diaper) and flat, and they work very well on top of the changing pad to keep poop from getting all over.  I also carried one in my diaper bag, so if I had to change my son on a dirty floor, I could do it on that and then toss it.

You'll need some kind of diaper bag, but it doesn't have to be for that purpose.  A bike messenger bag makes a good one.  Try to get one that's not so babyish or girlie that your husband would be embarrassed to carry it around.

Get several onesies, the tee-shirts that snap at the crotch.  My son could have lived in long-sleeved onesies and a sleep sack three-fourths of the time when he first came home.

Sleep sacks are great.  They substitute for a blanket, and the baby sleeps comfortably with his arms out (thus the long-sleeved onesie) in one.

Swaddlers are also great, used the same way as sleepsacks.

(My son was too hot in pajamas and a swaddler, or pajamas and a sleep sack, so very fast we went with just the long-sleeved onesie instead of pajamas.  He slept his whole babyhood in a long-sleeved tee and either a swaddler or sleepsack.)

People will give you cute baby clothes, since they are a great price point for gifts and all so cute.  You don't need to buy many of those.  They also will give you a lot of hats, and a lot of cute, soft blankets.  The blankets are not useful in the crib (smothering hazard) but they're useful for taking when you are out with baby.

If you are going to use bottles, you'll need bottles, the infant size of nipples, a brush for washing them, and probably one of those steamers they make for them.  You can also wash bottles in the dishwasher -- if you go that route, get one of those snapping baskets that holds the bottles and the nipples to keep them from flying around the dishwasher.

If you're going to feed formula, stock up on some.  Also get some distilled water, for mixing the formula.  Either that or plan to boil, then cool, water to mix the formula.

If you're going to breast feed, look into renting a breast pump from the hospital.

Get a copy of Your Baby's First Year Week by Week.  It's very handy and full of information.

A sling or baby carrier that you wear is also very handy, as those basket-type things are not very ergonomically comfortable for you to carry around with a baby in them after a very short time.

One thing we used right away with our infant is a sort of pad that lies on the floor, with a double arc of padded stuff that hung over the baby's head.  The baby would lie on it and look at the bright colors.

People also bring tons of toys.  Wait to see what comes before buying many things like that.

You definitely need a lot of blankets and onesies.  You go through a lot of clothing with them either spitting up or having diaper leaks.  If you are breastfeeding, you might need some leak cloth for your bra.  I always used a burp towel too when the other breast started to leak while I was feeding.

I highly recommend Butt Paste :D  It is one of the best diaper rash creams I have ever used and I have bought so many :(  I have used that with my two boys and it works like a charm.  I didn't buy a lot of diapers right off the bat and the reason for this is because sometimes the child can be sensitive to a certain diaper.  With my 2nd one I had to actually go into cloth, and then was able to get them on a regular diaper about 6 months.

A baby carrier for you to pack the baby around in is ideal.  I never really used a carrier that you use with a stroller but I know a lot of mothers do.  I kind of keep it simple.
