I assume you mean ashy in appearance, like elbows get?  Sure, it's safe.

Yes it's safe. Motherhood, Walmart and certain drug stores carry a cream it looks more like Vaseline in a toothpaste container that you can put on your nipples if they are dry or sore n helps keep them softer. I forgot what it's called but it's natural and safe so you don't have to worry about toxins or the baby getting sick.

The product is called lanolin. :) It is wonderful. You can also express some breastmilk and use that to help moisturize the area.

If you don't have Hepatitis B or C infection (which is only contraindicated if the mother's nipples are cracked or bleeding (or HIV/Aids which is totally contraindicated)

Then it is fine to breastfeed. The blood (if any) will not harm your baby.

Try expressing breastmilk directly to your nipples and try a pure form of lanolin. Lanolin can be found in many products, but you don't want any other chemicals other than 100% lanolin since you don't have to wipe it off before feeding your baby. It is safe and soothes cracked or dry nipples.
