Already 7 months off work - 3 disc protrusions, nerve compression and annulus tears

Hi, I have been off work for 7 months with sudden onset back pain (and associated leg pain). My GP has been of the mindset that 'it will heal itself' despite the fact that I am 25 and have been in constant pain and unable to function normally since November 07(walking, sitting, standing etc). I have always been very active and had no previous back problems until one November day when mid morning I found that I literally could not move and was in agony.

I paid for a private MRI last week to try and speed things up which shows I have three moderate disc protrusions (L3, L4 and L5) two with annulus tears, two that are compressing nerves and the MRI showed some stenosis. It also shows that there are signs of DDD.

I am due to see an orthopedic surgeon next week but would like an opinion on what I can expect. (I appreciate that this is difficuly without seeing the MRI) I know he is currently considering a steroid injection. I have been unable to work since November last year and now risk losing my job and my flat - if I need surgery I would rather have it sooner than later so I can get on with life especially as I have been told that there is a 4 month wait for surgery.

Thanks for your time! Becky

There are several treatment options for HNP  (Slipped discs, herniated discs, degenerative disc disease). These include newer non-surgical methods such as computerized spinal decompression, low level laser therapy, and also more advanced physical therapy such as aquatherapy. Percutaneous methods of treatment of DDD include Percutaneous Plasma Energy Discoplasty and Percutaneous Laser Discoplasty.
Minimally Invasive spinal microsurgery (MISS) and Percutaneous Endoscopic Laser Discetomy (PELD) are other various methods of treatment. Spinal microsurgery with dynamic implants and disc preservation are among the latest technologies.
Standard spinal surgery is widely available but may not always be the best treatment option as there is a weakening effect on the spine especially on the spine muscles and the discs.
