16 year old constant hip pain

my 16 year old sister has been suffering from an unexplainable hip pain for over 3 years now. she has been suffering a lot due to it, she cannot take part in sports and she finds it difficult traveling to and from college as she has to take public transport. The pain goes from bearable to excruciating, and on bad days she is on crutches and sometimes even a wheelchair.  She has been seeing a doctor for a long time, and she has had blood tests, bone scans, MRI, arthograms, physio, and doctors just can't find out what it is!
It's strange because sometimes she seems fine and she comes out with me in evenings and dances and it all seems ok, but other times she can't even get out of bed. She says she is in constant pain, and most of the time she tries to bare it and just get on with life.  She takes pain killers everyday, but she says they don't do much and she can't just rely on them her whole life, she wants to get better and lead a normal teenage life.
What could this be? I don't know much about medicine but is there anything she hasn't tried that she should? Or has anyone experienced something similar and knows how to cope with it?
She also has sleeping problems and rarely gets more than 1 - 2 hours sleep a night, i think it is due to the constant pain she is in.
Her hip mainly gets bad when she has had long days at college (particularly weds when she has a 12 hour day), when she is traveling in a car for a long time, and just at random times of the day as well.
Please help I am really worried about her!!

I am 16 and a sophomore in high school. I've been going to a chiropractor for my hips, back, and neck since seventh grade. Sometimes it helps, but not for that long, and sometimes it doesn't. My hips seem to always go right back out of place. My neck gets out of alignment and caused terrible headaches and sometimes dizziness. Any suggestions to what is wrong or what I should do? ~Megan

Hi...I wanted to suggest u also look at the possibility that u have a form of EDS- Ehlers -Danlos Syndrome...it is hypermobile joints to where the joints can pop in and out and cause pain...since sometimes u feel fine it could be the joint is stable...but when it slips in and out of joint is when u have the pain.

Please check out the Health Pages on the Chiari forum for EDS and ask ur dr to at least rule it out.

hey i have now found out what that hip pain is. I have the excact same sypmtoms as you. the doctors say that my hips are internally rotated which means my hips are more turned out and more backwards  then what they should be. i will need an operation. either to patch up the damage done from where i have worn it away or to put my hips back into the correct place
I hope this can help

Hello. I am 17 and I have the excact same problem I have had an MRI and waiting for the results. Does your sister still have that problem or has it worn off. When I was 8 I had a `virus` and couldnt walk. It has always ached since, but about 4 months it started being really painful and still is. I havent done anything to make it play up.
Do you now know what would help and ease the pain. It would be much appreciated.
