Abdominal and back excercises, spinal injury.

I'll put my query plainly, i wish to know if 'Sit-ups' can cause back and/or spinal injury? Particularly to the lumbar discs in the lower back. I have read so much research over the years on the crunches vs. sit-ups debate and no side ever seems to win. I prefer sit-ups over crunches and use them along with other excersises to keep my core strong for the line of work im involved in. Assuming over-training doesnt occur, adequate rest periods are allocated and correct form is perfected are they really still hazardous to your spine as some research has stated? If anyone can back up their position with published scientific research i would appreciate it.

Thank you for your time

This is an interesting article that addresses sit-ups specifically at the end and calls attention to the importance of form.  I recently had surgery (ACDF) in my neck due to a herniated disc, Degenerative Disc Disease, and arthritis, and have worked out, strength training and cardio religiously for years.  I have been researching the same thing recently and am finding that most articles will say I can do longer do either because of the strain on the spine.  Livestrong.com is another great site with an excellent search engine.  They have excellent articles on specific exercise information.  Hope that helps!
