Back Pain & Strange Symtpoms / Hard Swollen Lymph Nodes

by briansweat, Oct 21, 2009 01:05AM
I am a 21 year old male college student that is having some strange problems. About 6 months ago I started having back pain. Being very active, working out 5 days a week training for triathlons I figured I had just strained a muscle. The pain gradually got better, but then for no reason it got worse. I also started having fasciculations and muscle spasms regularly, and became extremely weak and fatigued (for having just been training for triathlons this seemed quite strange). I had a thoracic & lumbar MRI which showed Scheuermann's Disease and a very mildly herniated L5-S1 disc. I've seen two spine surgeons, who both agreed that these two problems should not be causing the moderate - severe pain I was in, nor any of my other symptoms. My health has been declining, I have been losing my appetite, have abdominal pain and bloating, having extreme fatigue and weakness, and eventually having to take a medical leave for my first semester of my senior year in college.

I have had hard swollen lymph nodes in my neck for about 2 years, and never though much of it because being a college student, you are constantly exposed to all sorts of wonderful infections & icky things. I also have many lipomas, and have made the mistake thinking the hard & swollen lumps in my groin were lipomas, and which in fact were lymph nodes as well. I have had multiple blood tests which haven't really found anything. I haven't been sick in well over a year with a cold, flu, or infection. The lymph nodes aren't overly swollen, about 1cm in size, but are very hard. My doctor said that that is normal, and the sign that your body is fighting an infection, although I don't have one. Does anybody have any ideas of what is going? What should I do?

sounds like classic hiv infection to me.
swollen lymph nodes are only swollen from infection,,,and if its a steady swollen state,it signafies constant state of infection.
id say either lymphoma cancer,,,,,or hiv infection.

I have been tested for HIV and it came up negative. I got my blood results back, and for the last 3 months my lymphocytes have been low. I think it is time to ask for a biopsy of my lymph nodes.
