Back or Bowels??

For a few years now I have been having reoccurring events that last anywhere from 3-5 days and can not seem to find an answer. These events occur randomly and has happened approx. 8 times in 2 yrs. It starts with lower back pain, I have had pain in this area since the 1st time continuously but mild and bruised feeling. The back pain gets bad and I have trouble standing up straight. Then my stomach starts to distend and my bowel sounds stop and my bowel gets rock hard all the way around as much as I can palpate. I can not pass gas  or stool. Laxitives dont work, neither does enema, in fact, I can barely get an enema in as rectum seems to be seized up. I do ice and heat and massage, and eventually its like it releases and the bowels start to work again and the pain in lower back subsides. I recently had a spine dr tell me I have a herniated disk at l4-l5. this diagnosis made by x-ray and exam. Finally my question is, could the disk get inflamed and push on nerves that make my bowels freeze up??

If the disk is pushing on the nerves than it can cause bowel problems. But I'm pretty sure it would be constant. Have you looked into something like IBS or something similar? If you start loosing control over your bowels than it would be time to worry. But to me this sounds like a GI problem.
