Back surgery or not

Back surgery or not

I have had severe back problems for approximately 8 yrs. Have found that I have 3 pinched nerves and my Dr. wants me to see a Surgeon.
My husband has had to have back surgery twice, still in pain and on meds, as well his brother has had back surgery twice and is now going for the third time, screws keep coming loose. Both have the same surgeon that my Dr. wants me to see.
I do take pain meds and have to go to hospital at least once every two months for a shot of morphine. Can't stand the pain. I have had cortisone shots in my back and the last time it didn't even work.
Anyone with info who can help please do so, I'm at wits end.
Thanks,

Welcome to the Back and Neck Community.  The members are here to provide assistance and support to individuals who are experiencing symptoms related to possible abnormal conditions of the cervical and/or lumbar spine.  The advice provided is based on personal experiences and is non-professional.  If you need further medical advice, please feel free to post on the Expert Forum and one of the medical doctors will assist you as appropriate.

I am sorry to hear of your prolonged pain and discomfort.  I imagine that it has altered your ability to function quite dramatically.  It is also unfortunate that the experiences your husband and his brother have had may have increased your reluctance to seek the surgical consultation that your Dr. has advised.
Please keep in mind that all individuals who undergo surgery do not result in bad outcomes.  Many result in improvement in subjective symptoms and a better ability to perform normal activities without the intense pain experienced prior to surgery.
You do not report any prior testing which you may have had, either x-rays or MRIs.  The referral to a surgeon would indicate that the underlying causes of your pain could possibly be helped with surgical intervention.  I would recommend that you follow through and at least obtain a consult with an orthopedic spine surgeon and/or neurosurgeon.  They will be able to review any prior tests, recommend any additional diagnostic testing and provide options for treatment.
You do not need to consent to surgery and some of the recommendations may be helpful (ie epidural injections, trigger point injections, anti-inflammatory medications and appropriate pain medications).
Please keep us posted on your decisions and know that we are here to assist you as much as possible.
Best wishes -----
