Bone Growth Stimulator - Can I use a used one?

I'm scheduled for a cervical spinal fusion near the end of this month, and was just notified that my neurosurgeon has ordered a "bone growth stimulator" for my use after surgery. I was given the name/number of a gal who would fit me with this device, and she told me that my portion of the cost for this thing is going to be $1750, up front, thank you very much.

My question - my mother in law had the same surgery a couple of years ago, and has one of these devices. Is there any reason I can't use hers?  The woman who would have me pay $1750 told me that the one from my mother in law is probably no good anymore, that they "expired after a year".  Can this be true, or is she blowing smoke up my trouser leg?  I want to have the best recuperation possible, but something about this just doesn't ring true.

Worst case scenario - if there truly IS some kind of kill switch on these pieces of equipment that render them useless after a certain time, is there a way to recharge them, or otherwise make them usable?

After being out of work for a time due to this injury, money's tight enough without spending it when I don't have to.

Thanks for any input!!!
