Bulging Disk L5/S1 - hardly any pain but numbness is a problem

by anse1981, Jun 08, 2008 08:08PM
Hello There,

Back in November 2007 I managed to bulge a disk that according to my MRI was L5/S1. At first I went to the emergency room and had morphine and then my right leg went almost completely numb. I saw a Nurosurgeon and he said there wasn't much to do and he wouldn't recommend surgery as the numbness was probably permanent anyway.

The problem isn't pain though. I hardly get any pain. My biggest problem is that my leg has recovered somewhat and now I only have numbness down the right side of my right calf muscle and all of my right toes except my big toe.

I can walk okay but I do limp a fair bit and I have very little muscle control of my right thigh even though it is not numb.

I am trying to lose weight to see if that helps but I was wondering if there is anything I can do to try and get the feeling back in my leg and gain control over my thigh muscle again?

Sometimes when I wake up my calf muscle and foot tingles all day long and sometimes when I put my legs up on pillows it feels like some feeling comes back to some of my toes but once I stand up it goes back to being numb again - so this leads me to believe that the nerve isn't crushed bad enough for it to be permanent.

Should I try acupunture, or see a physio or chiro? The last physio I saw didn't want to touch it as she was worried she would make it worse?

It was a freak accident really. I was asleep on the sofa one night and when I woke up and swong my legs down to stand up, I felt like I broke something, apparently the disk bulged then and it has been this way since.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi,sorry to know it.
It seems that you suffer from stenosis as typical symptoms.
"you only have numbness down the right side of your right calf muscle and all of your right toes except your big toe"
That means you havn't suffer inflammation in your spine canal but pressure which can lead to numbness in your legs and feet.( if inflammation come about, you should feel pain as well)

Pilate and physiotherapy can help,as they can stretch ligment to wide space of canal.
Deep and intensive acupuncture can help poor circulation of lower back.

Good luck!
