Calcium for lower back spasms

by Joe_M, Dec 10, 2008 05:11PM
First a little history. In 1978 I started having muscle spasms. I was bending over and it hit suddenly. I went to every kind of doctor and had every kind of test for 6 months. Including Chiropractors, electro stimulation, physical therapy etc, etc. Nothing worked except to relieve pain for short periods. I was desperate and went to my in-laws doctor who was much older. He gave me a shot of (I'm not 100% on this) Calcium Gluconate and I was pain free and 100% to go in one hour! I had been fine until 1988 when I bent over to pick up my baby. Intense pain again hit me in the lower back, buttocks and down both legs. I went to a doctor that ran more tests including an MRI. Gave me a cortisone shot and pain pills and said I would have to learn to live with it. After two weeks of searching because I was living in a different state.. I again found (an older) doctor who said he would give me the shot of calcium gluconate. I paid him $30.00 and got the shot. Again I was totally cured of pain within an hour. I had not had any back problems whatsoever until now in 2008. I have spoken with 12 doctors to date and all say they have never heard of this procedure. I explained that I was told by the doctors that gave me the shots that it is routinely given to people in nursing homes and elderly care homes for relief of lower back pain. All 12 of these doctors want me to go through expensive tests which. being retired, I cannot afford. Has anyone heard about this procedure and how in the world can I find a doctor willing to give me this shot? I even had a doctor tell me that if it was that simple. He would have to change specialties. I say that to show how hard it is to try to get a doctor to research it.

Since no one has responded. I assume no one has heard of this treatment. It has been 5 days since my back went out and I am mobile again and able to work. All the doctor wanted to do when I went 4 days ago was put a cortisone shot on each side of my lower back. Give me some heavy duty pain meds and schedule some physical therapy for next week. I didn't have the time or money for that.
So I bought a bottle of Calcium Gluconate dietary supplement. Took 3 in the morning and 3 at bedtime. Used a heating pad for 20 minutes every 30 minutes all day. Took 2 aleve every 6 hours. The pain is nearly gone and I can at least work. I'll continue this for a week and I'll let you know the results.
