Can leg weakness come stem from my spine?

by MisterTimC, Sep 05, 2009 12:35PM
I have had a couple of problems in my back for several years and now my legs are getting really weak. What to do?

I am 58, 5'5", 157 lbs. and have had pain come and go for years; most of the time the pain has been annoyable but at occasionally I will have a flare-up with constant, distressing pain that really wears me down. I have had a few MRIs over the past few years that show various degenerative problems in my neck at C5-6; arthritis, stenosis, spondylosis, causing compression of the spinal cord and nerve roots. I also have an hemangioma at L1 with some mild compression of the vertebrae, and the pars defect at L5.

Could it be that the leg weakness is a result of nerve irritation, compression, or damage? Or could there other causes of the leg weakness? I don't have pain going down my legs, just shakiness and weakness. The weakness is tolerable in the morning but by mid-afternoon I can barely stand, let alone walk. Using crutches helps me get around, but I'm getting to the point where I really need a wheelchair.

My spine doctor is somewhat puzzled by the degree of weakness I'm feeling. I have a nerve study scheduled next week so I might know a little more after that.

What is the best way to get the nerve damage to heal if that is what is causing the weakness?

I would like to move this question to the Doctor's forum, but it is full. If anyone else can help I would sure appreciate it.
