Can't get up!!

I had a lower  back fusion surgery on October 12th.  My greatest problem is trying to get out bed.  Any suggestions?

Just another important thought. As you just had surgery, check with your surgeon to make certain you are approved to make the motions required in a log roll.

If you are being followed by a Physical Therapist you can also ask him/her. I  don't want to suggest something that your body is not ready for - we don't want any extra stress on your spine and it's structure.

I am not a physician and you need to be followed by one - at least until you are through the healing process.

Thanks for asking a great question. Hopefully this info can be helpful to other readers and members also. Always follow your physician's advice and consult him/her before taking suggestions on any internet sites.

Again - Good Luck!

Peace,

Hello Teena,

Welcome to our community. I'm sorry to hear about your spine issues. We can relate.

Is your bed a bit low? I found placing risers under the legs of his bed which made it easier for my father to get in and out of bed.

I also taught him how to  "log roll"  out of bed. Get to the edge of the bed and roll as if you were going to roll onto the floor. (Think of a pendulum swinging because that's what your body is going to do). As you roll let your feet drop to the floor and bring your upper torso to an upright position using an arm to right yourself. It takes a little practice - be safe about it - but it takes the stress off pulling yourself upright and swinging your feet onto the floor.

I may not be explaining well. There are multiple u-tube videos on the internet that demonstrate the log roll. I am not saying the link I'm providing is the best video - it's just one I found. Here's the link:

Remember the height of your bed makes a difference. If it's too low that will be difficult for your back. Being too high may make it easier to get out of but more difficult to get into. So find the right height and it'll be easier on your spine.

I hope this helps. Please let us know how you are doing.

Take Care,
~Tuck
