Knill,

Did you ever get learn the cause of your muscle spasms and more importantly, did they resolve? How are you doing now? My mom is scheduled to undergo major cervical surgery involving fusing C1 through T1

Thank you for commenting on my question. On January 2013 I had an anterior cervical decompression and fusion C7-T1, and on September 2013 I had a posterior cervical fusion C1-C6 with a neurectomy at right C2.

Earlier in my life Around 1981 I had C6-C7 fused from an injury and around 1991 I had C3-C4 fused but it never fused.

With both these 2013 surgeries I have muscle spasms in my neck and scalp, and nerve pain shooting through my right side of scalp. My surgeon is not sure why, possible a screw is too close to my skull, but if he removes the screw he's not sure if my problems will disappear. It's only been a little over 5 months and I decided to wait for at least another 6 to 7 months and have physical therapy to see if it will help. I just wanted to see if anyone else having this type of surgery has experienced problems similar to mine.

Hi!
Usually depending on the severity of problem, upper or lower or middle level vertebrae are fused together. Entire cervical spine from C1 to T1 is usually not fused together. In some cases, this may be done, especially if there is a chance of vertebrae collapsing or severe nerve or cord compression. However, please consult your specialist regarding this. Take care!
