Cervical curvature

The top of my spine is curving forward pushing my head slightly forward.  The muscles in my shoulders and neck seem to be in spasm and cause me daily pain.  Years ago I was told that the only solution was to live with it or to get my spine fused, preventing me from turning my neck properly.  I am 33 years old and was wondering, "Is there any surgery that could be performed to correct the allignment of my spine?"

Loss of the normal curvature of your neck can result in the symptoms of spasm and pain you are experiencing.  Treatment for this condition would depend on the underlying causes.  If it is a congenital (at birth) deformity or the result of degenerative disc disease, surgery could be indicated.  The extent of the surgery would depend on the severity of your condition.
Fusion surgery might result in some loss of movement in your neck, but that would depend on how many levels were fused.  I recently had cervical fusion C4-C7 and have very minimal loss of motion in my neck.
If surgery is not indicated or not done, chiropractic care might be beneficial in treating the symptoms.  It basically comes down to whether your spine is stable and can handle manipulation.  Severe degenerative disease would make chiropractic treatment less likely to produce longterm results.
It would be beneficial to make an appt with an orthopedic spine specialist who can perform a clinical exam and obtain any x-rays and/or MRI testing to determine the extent and severity of your condition.  Once the clinical findings are reviewed, the available treatment options can be discussed in detail.
