Chronic Pain

I was forced to leave sports when I was told that I had two scar tissue tumors in my lower back one on each side. I went to my general practitioner, had x-rays taken and they referred me to an orthopedic surgeon for possible removal who decided that they weren't what was giving me the pain and near paralysis (at times).  Even though the general prac. said that removal or cortisone is a high possibility, the Ortho just sent me on my way.  The pain is near constant and is prevalent in every position: standing, sitting, laying down.  I have been forced to cut certain activities because when I run it inflames the tumors and they start to hurt.  This has been a long time and I have just lived with the pain and change in lifestyle (I went from 180lbs to 265lbs!).  Any suggestions?  Is there a way for me to return to real life and sports again?
