Comparing FDA-Approved Artifical Discs (cervical)

Hi, there -

I have been diagnosed with a severe cervical stenosis and most definitely have the array of symptoms that go along with it.  Almost a year and a half ago, a spinal surgeon recommended I opt for disc replacement as opposed to fusing since he thought I would be a good candidate for it.

For multiple reasons (fear and denial being two of the strongest :), I have put this surgery off but now am reluctantly pursuing it again since the symptoms are increasingly difficult to bare.

At the time, the only artificial disc that was approved by the FDA was the Prestige.

I now see that several others have been approved since then, particularly the Bryan also produced by Medtronics.  From what I can tell, the biggest improvement seems to be the cushioning it may offer - versus the metal-on-metal appearance of the Prestige.

First, can anyone offer me some information or guidance regarding which tends to be the best one available today?  Has anyone had this surgery using the Bryan?  If so, would greatly appreciate some feedback on your personal experience with it.

Also, since it was just approved in June or July of last summer, should I be concerned at all about the short amount of time surgeons have had to use it?

I'm a healthy, relatively active 36-year old female.  Since I've put this surgery off for so long, I figured I might as well take advantage of the new technology that is out there if it's superior in any way to the Prestige.

Thanks in advance for your attention.  I have my follow-up appointment in a couple of weeks and want to be educated about the alternatives before I see my surgeon.

Jen
