Once it herniates it stays pretty much the same. If you stop feeling the pain and other symptoms like numbnessNumbness and tingling, tingling & pins & needles, weaknessWeakness then you can assume that it is healing. What is he giving you for the inflamation (inflammation) and has he mentioned surgery if the symptoms don't go away or start getting worse? If the herniation was big enough to reach the nerveNerve biopsy Nerve conduction velocity sac and penetrate it then I don't think that it will seep back into the disk and seal itself up. You might want to look into herniated disks on the mdweb or something. Good luck with your healing. If you get worse or it's not getting better after awhile ask to see a neurosurgeon or an orthopedic surgeon for a consult. Don't wait many months though because you can do damage to the nerve.
It will never "heal" in the sense that you will be able to do what you did before the injury. You have a permanent disability. Keep yourself well hydrated, and resolve yourselve never again to strain your back with a heavy lift. This requires social skills. You have to tell youe girlfriend/spouse you can't move the heavy boxes up to the attic anymore. Not next week. Not ever. Even light lifts require that you lift "properly". You need to check with your insurance carrier and if not use your own money to engage the services of a professional rehabilitation therapist who will guide you through exercises that will develop supporting muscles. You can't learn these from the internet or a CD disc. These people KNOW what they are doing and it will be the best money you ever spent.
the herniation will sometimes heal it can take up to six months, after that they are less optimistic about it healing and you may need surgery. I have had two herniated disks for two years on my lumbar spine, and i had back surgery five months ago. i still have severe pain. But im still recovering from surgery. I know how you feel, keep your core muscles exercised and drink lots of water and physical therapy. you can also try injections. I had three and never had relief. it just depends on the person. good luck
