Yeah it usually happens the next day. But if its just from sore muscles you will know it.  Im sure you've had sore muscles in the past from lifting weights, it really has a specific feel to it.  It is as you know im sure muscle type aches, usually in the areas you worked out.  If something is a really sharp unrelenting pain, that can usually be a sign that you may have injured something and need to see an md.

Thanks for the advice Missy, it was helpful. I've been lifting for a while now and my technique is ok - I just found it very odd as this has never happened before. I will admit to adding more weights to my bar than I usually do, but it felt ok during the exercise. I'll try a long bath and hope to god I can finally stretch my arms without the agony.
Thanks again.

hi,
Lifting weights can certainly make you sore especially the next day if you over do it and are not used to working out. OR if you added more weight to what you normally use.  Lactic acid builds up and it takes awhile to get worked out.  Take a nice hot bath perhaps with some empsoms salts, they relax your muscles.  Over the counter magnesium may help also.  Make sure you keep moving and stretch.  But if you are that sore wait till you feel a bit normal again before working out.

However all this being said, if you are in extreme pain, something that feels like more than sore muscles see your md to be on the safe side.

Also be careful lifting weights there is an a specifc way to lift weights and if you dont have the knowledge you can really hurt yourself. Read some books, maybe a trainer if you can afford it.  If your at a gym, you can ask questions from staff.

good luck
