Help! Consistent Lower Back Ache >2 months

I have had consistent lower back pain for about two months now.  Sitting down tends to ache the most..   The pain level is a consistent 3 of 10.  Also, bending down to put, shoes or socks on is accompanied by a sharp pain (7/10) in the same area.  When walking or standing upright the pain seems to subside.  I'm 32 yrs old, 5'11 185 lbs (lean <10% bf), very healthy and physically active.  Never had back issues before. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Chris, I have too little information to give you an answer about what's wrong.

You are young, and probably athletic -- did this appear suddenly as the result of a fall or from sports?

If so, your PCP might be your best bet for an initial diagnosis and treatment options, like PT or medication.

In the mean time, ice and heat are both great remedies for back pain.

However, if this pain has come on for no apparent reason, has components that shoot down arms or legs, or leave you with "pins and needles" sensations, a diagnosis might require more skill in the spine.

Some people prefer seeing a chiropractor, but if I were you, I'd choose a board certified spine and pain doctor. This is an advanced practice of anesthesiology, with training specific to pain and its treatment, chronic pain, and diseases of the spine. They have the credentials MD, DABPM.

You can find them in private practice through your local state pain society, or at a local university hospital (with a medical school) pain clinic.

Best wishes.
