Hurt

Hello, I am a martial arts instructor and I have been diagnosised with my L4/l5 and s1 something or anothers.  I had a MRI dones and it says i have herniated disc touching my root or something like that as well as DDD .  I am currently taking Mobic and flexiril, however It still hurt.  This pain has been going on for about 1 year now, it seems every six month i am back at the doctors office for the same thing.  I have been referred to a neurosurgeon, but I can not be seen for another 3 weeks. I was wondering if there was something else I can do to releave the pain.  I went to Physical therapy for 3 weeks and everytime left their crying I was in so much pain.  This pain goes down my lower back into my butt and dowm to my toes.  I love teaching martail arts, i have since stopped with all the rolls and falls, and was wondering if I have the surgery approx. how long after can I go full force back into my martial arts.

Welcome to the community, but sorry to hear about your pain. From what I know, if they do surgery, it will be to fix is nerve root impingement. That is what is causing the pain to go all the way down to your toes.  However, the ddd is a different kind of pain, with a different treatment. DDD is the disk aging, leaving it vulnerable to future herniation and difficulties especially  with such an active lifestyle .  You will have to be careful to drink lots of water take good care of your body so that your disks last as long as possible.
So surgery will most likely relieve most of your pain, but not all of it. You shouldnt have a problem getting back to your normal life soon, but it depends on how well you heal after your surgery. Be prepared for the possibility of scar tissue after surgery, sometimes you can have minor issues with that later on.  Good luck, hope this helps!  Stacey
