L1-L2 disc surgery

I had massive herniation with cord compression & severe nerve root compression to L1-L2 in Sept. I had no health ins and got 'lost in the system' until I pitched a hissy fit in an ER and they did MRI with/without contrast and saw WHY I was pitching that fit. I had surgical repair on in early November and was immediately better...for about 3 weeks. Now, I'm progressively getting the numbness in the same areas, have daily back pain that is progressive to where I have to take pain pill for relief from about mid afternoon til sleep.
I know L1-L2 herniations are rare (1% of all back surgeries) On top of the returning back pain, I now have neck pain and numbness/burning in my shoulder and scapula and a numb middle finger, off and on at no specific time day or night.
My thoughts on it are that I am compensating or guarding for the mid back pain using other muscles and now my neck is yelling out. I should be getting better all the time, though, not worse, right??
