L4-L5 LUMBAR DISC HERNIATION

L4-L5 LUMBAR DISC HERNIATION

I am a registered nurse and have a question about my MRI results.  I  have been having back pain since an ATV accident on 04/28/07.  I have had a gastric bypass 4 years ago and can't take anti-inflammatory drugs because of this.  I have been trying to self treat but with no success.  I went to my physician and  recently had an MRI of my lumbar spine.  The impression states:  Central/left paracentral L4-L5 protruding type lumbar disc herniation resulting in mild effacement along the ventral margin of the thecal sac.  No nerve impingement noted.   No free disc fragments identified.    I have had been having a burning sensation down both buttocks and right leg. I have just recently over the last few days noticed having problems with constipation and my bladder.  I am not taking any pain medications at present trying to see if the medication is the cause of my problems.  I have not had my medicine in several days now and no change.  I have an appointment in a couple of weeks with a neurosurgeon.
Is this something to worry about?  and  What type of surgery is normally done to correct this type of herniation, I have not been able to find any information on the internet on this.    Thank you in advance for any information.

Hi,

Sorry to hear about your accident. I can't speak of the surgery, because I don't know exactly what's wrong with you, but I did want to say that just because your MRI does not show nerve impingement, does not mean that you don't have it. The neurologist will do an EMG to test for a pinch nerve and pinpoint its exact location. Perhaps that is what your main problem is?
The bladder and constipation can also be an issue with an interrupted nerve.
Because your accident is only 4 months old, you may just need more time to recover. It takes a long time for nerves to heal.
Good luck to you on your search for answers!
Cheers!
