Large, very firm hematoma under incision after surgery

Large, very firm hematoma under incision after surgery

I had two lipoma's that were side by side over my left sacroiliac joint removed over 4 weeks ago.  My orthopedic surgeon performed the surgery.  He initially thought he could remove both lipoma's through a 1" incision or less and told me to expect to be out of commission for a couple of days,  but when he got in there, he discovered that both lipomas were the size of golf balls, so I ended up with a 3" incision instead.  The staples were removed 10 days after the surgery.  After that, the swelling increased.  After 14 days, I ended up with a  large drooping "puddle" directly above the incision.  Within a day or two of that, the hematoma began getting very firm, so I went in to have the Dr. check it.  He said the size of the hematoma was very impressive (it's about the size of a grapefruit and feels like one!).  He said there wasn't any way he could drain any fluid at this point because it was so congealed.  Before that visit, he had just suggested putting ice over the incision.  This time he suggested alternating ice and heat, and having my husband lightly massage the mass to help break it up.  Last weekend, it seemed that the hematoma might have been getting a bit smaller, but the next day, it was back to grapefruit size.

After doing some research on my own, I've started taking some natural enzymes, hoping that will help, and also started putting an epson salt compress over the area several times a day.  So far, nothing seems to be working.  I still have to wear very loose clothing (the hump is very noticeable through even my lose clothing), I still can't sit back in a chair, and it hurts too much to lay on my back. Sleeping has become a thing of the past unless I take a sleeping pill, and that only works for a little bit.  I eventually wake up due to not being able to get comfortable.  It's staying so sore that it seems to be causing me back pain across my lower back constantly.  Of course, having to lean sideways on the couch and sleep on my side for a month might have something to do with that.  The only way I can describe the pain that lingers is that it feels like I've been kicked in the back with a steel toed boot.

The Dr. doesn't have me scheduled to come back to see him for another 6 weeks.  He told me that it will be absorbed over time, but didn't give me a time frame.  Is there anything else I can try to help get this to soften and dissolve?  I've read about smaller hematoma's on here, but how long should it take on average for a one this large to go away?  It can't be soon enough for me!
