Left lower abdominal pain

I have had left lower abdominal pain on & off over the past 1.5 years, mostly at night. I saw my doctor for reg check up & told her & that I haven't been able to gain any weight despite trying for past year.  The pain is slowly getting worse and now I feel heavy/dull pain there sometimes during the day, even just sitting.  It is getting hard to turn over in bed at night at times.  Last year I saw my gyn doc & she said there was a tiny ovarian cyst which she did not think would cause that pain (had ultrasound in the office).  She suggested colonoscopy since I am now 54.  My mother got sick, I put it off, and I am too scared of the procedure.  Now I am nauseated for a week. any suggestions/alternatives?
