Lower back pain with pain and weakness in legs please help!!

Was wndering if anyone knew what may be going on, i do understand ur not doctors but i'd like a general overview of people's opinions please.
Over the last 5 months i have been gettng pain in my lower back, just by my tail bone that speads out across my pelvis.... it is a sharp stabbing pain which causes me to yelp and moan when i bend, sit/stand...d anything really. It eases off only to suddenly reappear. Once or twice i have needed to use crutches to support my legs cause thy become weak and the pain travels down and is bad.
have been to doc twice about this but only given painkillers, no x-rays or anything.....doc thinks it's a trapped nerve, could this be right and if so is there anything i can do to improve this without taking loads of painkillers as they just make me feel sick to my stomach.
Ohh also when i bend my neck into my chest i get the sharp stabbing pain in the bottom of my back, it feels lie my spinal cord is being pulled tight.....????
