It sounds to me like the surgery may be the best option. Don't go by my word though. Make sure you do plenty of research and ask your surgeon as many questions as you can think of about the surgery. What type of surgery are they planning on doing? Do they just plan to cut the disc off that's protruding out? Do they plan on doing a fusion? Do the plan on putting in a artificial disc?
I would also recommend a 2nd opinion so you feel more comfortable about everything. The more opinions you get, the better.
Start writing down your questions before your next visit so you can cover all areas of what they plan on doing during surgery. When I had mine done they just cut off the herniated disc. I am now getting the feeling like 2 of my vertebrates are rubbing together. This is why I would ask about what their plans are for you. This makes me wonder if I should have had a fusion when I had my surgery. They didn't have the artificial discs approved here in the US when I had my surgery. I do go see a neurosurgeon Dec. 4th to see what my next steps are.
Best of luck and keep us informed.

Whenever I go to my office the pain becomes unbearable. After bed rest pain subsides but shoots if I perform any activity
I had a herniated disc at the L5-S1 level. I tried everything such as epidural steroid injections, physical therapy, accupuncture, etc. I still ended up getting the surgery a year later. I wish I would have gotten the surgery from the get go. I would go and get a 2nd opinion to see what another doctor would say. Are you currently having any pain, tingling, or numbing to any of your extremities?
