Tonsillar ectopia is not a disease of the spine, but is a brain anomaly where a small part of the cerebellum descends through the foramen magnum and can cause compression on the brainstem.

NSAIDs and physical therapy have been known to help reduce the inflammation of disc disease related scarring (osteophytes).
Find a good neck practitioner and perhaps you can find relief from pain.
However if cord 'indenting' is severe and threatens to occlude the spinal cord, you must have decompression surgery. If is ineed the case, then get a second opinion, but don't risk, for too long, the nasty side effects of severe spinal stenosis.
