MRI Scan and Treatment

I've just had this MRI report

MRI Spine lumbar + sacral: Routine examination. Mild degenerate lumbar scoliosis with disc degenration from L1/2 to L5/S1. Multiple level posterior anular disc bulges.. No evidence of a significant disc protrusion into the spinal canal. There is a right foraminal/ extra foraminal disc protrusion at L3/4.

Can anyone interpret this and tell me what treatment might be available to stop the chronic pain affecting my leg and hip?

Thanks for your help
Cheers

Forgot to say your leg pain does sound like sciatica but only if it travels down the back of the leg following the path of the nerve.

Hi there,
Well the most telling thing from your scan is . . . .  No evidence of a significant disc protrusion into the spinal canal. . . . so sciatica (or other nerve pain) should not be a problem as sciatica is the impingement of the sciatic nerve at some point along it's length. That is where the problem lies . . . spinal and neuro surgeons only recognise disc or spine related nerve impingment when it relates to sciatic nerve impingment. BUT this nerve is the longest in the body, so it makes sense( to everyone except neuro surgeons) that there could be a problem lower down the nerves length. Check out piriformis syndrome.(PS) You tube Dr's Aaron Filler and George Best and google PS.
See if any of your symptoms relate. It is rare so maybe not, but worth a look.
For treatment try conservative exercise, pilates, physio, etc. Nothing on your scan would indicate a need for surgery and any way even if it did always try conservative measures 1st.  There is a PS stretching exercise on You Tube if you think it may be that. What did the consultant say about your scan?
Take care.

Spinal fusion may help my wife had discectomy but to no avail. Then she had spinal fusion but it did not work for her but it may for you. In my opinion it is a lot of pain for a 30 percent chance! You need to discuss it with your spinal surgeon if you have one. I hope this may help you! Good luck.
