Multiple Fusions - Yes or go 4 artificial

Is it a case of fusion and artifical discs being alternatives or are they mutually exclusive?? Is there a third, middle option??

There have been Hybrid study's  done combining fusions and artificial discs in the lumbar spine, I don't know about the cervical. However I have no idea how widely used these procedures are. The Surgeons are using a Hybrid fusion to address a 2-level DDD. At L5-S1 their doing a Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion for stability. And at L4-5 their using an artificial disc to preserve motion. At 2 years the numbers look pretty good, but 2 years isn't a very long time.
