Hi!
I am sorry to hear about your symptoms. Irritation of the anterior fibers of C2-3 spinal nerves with spasm of the muscles attached to hyoid bone could be responsible for your symptoms. This usually happens due to injury as in surgery or postural problems causing curving of lower cervical spine. This at times responds to corrective physiotherapy and wearing cervical braces/collars.
If the fusion was done using an anterior approach, then the symptoms could be due to injury o voice box, and injury to nerves involved in speech and swallowing. You need to consult a neurologist to find the cause. Take care!
The medical advice given should not be considered a substitute for medical care provided by a doctor who can examine you. The advice may not be completely correct for you as the doctor cannot examine you and does not know your complete medical history. Hence this reply to your post should only be considered as a guiding line and you must consult your doctor at the earliest for your medical problem.
I sympathize with your situation, I’ve had a couple neck surgeries myself, so I know the whole thing can be overwhelming at times
I can honestly say that apart from right after surgery, I’ve never had the throat and voice problems you wrote about, sounds horrible. And I don’t think it’s normal or that you should be experiencing this a year after surgery. The weakness should gradually get better, depending on how bad the nerves were pinched.
That was a very extensive surgery you had, I’ve only had one level done at time and the recovery for those was pretty bad. I have fingers that are still numb, eight years later; I was told that the nerve damage was too severe.
Are you still seeing the Doctor that did this surgery, were you released? Have you had any type of post-op MRI or other imaging? Were you referred to P.T. ,Osteopath or Pain Management after surgery? Sounds like you should really be seeing someone, I hope you’re not trying to go this alone?
