Neck Surgery

My sister was in a bad wreck.  She broke her C2 bone but was very lucky not to be paralyzed or die.  But now the disk is slipping.  It sounds like we have limited time to make any choices.  Her doctor is recommending putting a metal plate in.  We would like to know the risk factors and the success rate of this surgery on this particular vertebrae?  What percentage of people live through this without being paralyzed?  Are there other, more successful option that we could discuss with the Dr?

Hi there!

Well, it would be difficult for me to answer the question about the available options other precisely without knowing the relevant clinical details and the severity of the condition. Specific risk(s) associated with the surgery and prognosis is largely dependent on the initial condition and the type of surgery undertaken i.e. where exactly are they planning to plant the metal plate and the type of procedure. I would suggest discussing the pros and cons in detail with her treating surgeon.
Hope this is helpful.

Take care!
