Neck and tension headaches

I have known a pretty long time that I have at least a mild Scoliosis and mild degeneration on some lower discs.  And about a year and half  a go I hurt my neck pretty darn bad.  I didn't think I would be the same again.  Then sure enough I started having tension headaches constantly 24/7, eye twitches, neck tension.  I've learned to use relaxation techniques but it hasn't helped me find the root problem. A doctor I saw too ex-rays and detected some arthritis.  And he suggested that I have an MRI done.  But I can't afford one yet.  Does anyone know a way I can get out of pain while I save for this.  I started to take an herb called Kava kava as and alternative to skelaxin (expensive).  Is that safe to take?  I've read rumors about it.  
I have insurance but it's not the best in the word so I have to kind of start my tests after the beginning of the year.  Thanks.
