New Numbness after Laminotomy

by bob9, Dec 20, 2007 04:11PM
On 11/21 I had back surgery to relieve chronic pain in my right leg (sciatica) and intermittent pain below my left knee that I experienced as tingling and burning especially in my left foot.  An MRI and CT scan revealed a pinched nerve between the L4 and L5 vertebrae.  Because the MRI seemed to indicate some arthritic degeneration on the right side, my surgeon decided to make a small incision in the left side of my back.  He proceeded to remove a small bone spur that was causing the discomfort in my left leg --- this turned out to be a success.  Once this procedure was completed, he moved over to the right side, where he removed another bone spur that was supposed to fix the problem I was having with my right leg.  After the operation was completed, my surgeon told me it was a success with no complications.  However, ever since I woke up from the anesthesia, my right leg from my buttocks to my foot has been numb with no improvement since the operation.  Also, the chronic sciatica pain I had, still remains.  My surgeon cannot explain this situation and has suggested a possible second operation, pending the results of a second MRI and x-rays.  The left side of my right foot including the big toe is not numb but all of my other toes especially the two smallest ones feel totally numb, as does my arch including my heel.  When I mentioned this to my surgeon he said something about the "S" nerve.  I am very worried that this will turn out to be a permanent disability.  A further complication is the fact that I had a stroke, triggered by a car accident six years ago resulting in temporary paralysis on my right side.  I made close to a full recovery, except for some residual weakness and hypersensitivity or numbness on my right side that most recovered stroke victims experience.  However the stroke did not affect either my right hand or right foot, which never lost any feeling.  In other words, the numbness I now feel in my right foot and side is a result of the operation.  So my question: Can someone shed light on what might have caused my numbness and whether this is likely to be a permanent condition?
