Newly diagnosed with a Syrinx

I just found out I have a syrinx in my C6-C7.  I have been having symptoms for almost a year (this began when I was 22 and I am now 23).  I do not know what the cause is.  I have an MRI scheduled for this coming week to find out if I have any tumors or if there are any other areas on my spine as my original MRI was to rule out MS.  I have been told that surgery does not always work.  My father-in-law had a tumor removed from his cervical spine about a year ago and he had one of the top surgeons in the world at Johns Hopkins working on him.  He's doing well but is now physically disabled.  This is a fear of mine if I were to have surgery for this.  Does anyone have any insight on the possibility of surgery?  Also, how will I know if I have a progressive syrinx where I will continue to decompensate?  I am looking for a bit of solace because I am about to graduate from grad school and I feel like I'm barely going to have a chance to use my degree and I'll never be a mother.  I'm just very fearful for my future.
