Pain after cervical fusion when on road bike

I had surgery to fuse C 4, 5, and 6 several years ago with only slight loss in my range of motion.  I am a newbie triathlete who was using a bike with straight bars, but have recently bought a road bike with dropped handlebars (it goes VERY fast!).  With the new bike, I have to lift my head to see where I am going while riding.  I now have chronic neck pain that does not seem to be muscular.

Could riding this bike put too much stress on the adjoining, not-fused vertebrae?  That's my main fear.  The pain is not severe... maybe a 4... but persistant.
