BACK & NECK COMMUNITY
Pain increases with activity

Pain increases with activity

I have been in several accidents and have lived with varying degrees of burning and pain in my back since I was a little girl, but it has gotten much worse.

I wear a cape of burning that starts halfway down my neck and extends to my waist and it goes from shoulder to shoulder.  This started in 1998 after a 320 pound patient dropped in my arms during a transfer to a commode.  Why is it still burning? The doctor who examined me for Social Security okay-ed me for benefits immediately. Why?  Am I going to have to live with this for the rest of my life?

I also have pain that stays in the shoulders and upper back. Opiates, the TENS unit, meditation, and physical therapy don't help. In fact, during a PT session, electrical jolts went down both arms to the finger tips, so I quit going. We tried two injections into the spine and there wasn't any relief. During one of those sessions, the doctor didn't do it right and I felt crazy jolts throughout my back, arms, neck, and shoulders. When I try to push past the pain and do my ADLs, it feels like my upper back is going to explode, then if I still don't stop, I can't use my arms at all.

My Physical Therapist told me that with spinal cord damage, I shouldn't be able to knit, but I have to be able to do something. I did find that if I do this close to my body and low enough, I can mange to knit for awhile at a time. This does nothing to improve my pain, but it does stop me from trying to do the things that really hurt. Weights aren't any worse of a problem for me than any other activity that I try to do. I can actually lift 100 pounds with either hand.

MRIs show  a bulged disc at C5 and a hemangioma at T3.  Could this be causing the pain and burning?  I need it fixed. My heart is also being affected by this. I am also severely Constipated. I can't go for a week and then when I do, I go from a size 16 to a size 12 in just hours.
