Pinch Nerve-In My Back

Well, I have been having this crazy pain that I can't get rid of in the left side of my lower-back ever since I was in my early twenties (when the pain gotten worse--onset of actually back pain: 18 years old). Therefore, I have been in pain for 18 years and tired of it! Something has to be done in 2012! When it gets really bad it starts hurting like crazy and then my back becomes numb and tingles. Why is that?  Is it something more serious than just a "pinch nerve?" What can be done about it? My doctor says nothing can be done. But, I refuse to hear that! I know it has to be some type of option(s) out here. They have options out here for other back concerns. Then why not mine? Ok. Enough said. Now, I do take pain killers for it. That works for the moment. But, I need something a little long term. Looking for all suggestions and advice! Thanks in advance!

Well, without a clinical evaluation it would be difficult to determine the cause of your symptoms or suggest a possible management plan. Possibilities that may need to be considered include nerve pressure/ impingement, postural issues, spinal causes such as degenerations, inflammations, muscular/ ligamental issueses, growths/ masses etc. I would suggest consulting an orthopedician for an evaluation. After a cause is identified it can be managed accordingly. Meanwhile you could try warm compresses and/ or OTC tylenol/ NSAIDS for pain relief and see if these seem to help.
