the only thing that i will tell you...as im sure others will....surgery is a personal decision that you will have to make for yourself. surgery will ONLY help with the leg pain...you will always have the back pain. there are no guarantees that surgery will help....keep it the same..or make it worse. this is something that you have to do research on for yourself and decide if its worth the gamble. not trying to scare you or sway you....but some ppl come out of surgery with more problems than they had to begin with........some ppl..surgery or not, can develop foot drop, and even cauda equina (loss of bowel or bladder function). so the surgery is not something to take very lightly! but some ppl are HAPPY that they had the surgery done.  no medications will cure you....only give pain control. have you tried physical therapy or epidural steriod injections?

A Schmorl's node is an upward and downward protrusion (pushing into) of a spinal disk's soft tissue into the bony tissue of the adjacent vertebrae (the bony building blocks of the spine). Schmorl's nodes are detectable with an x-ray test as a spine abnormality.
Schmorl's nodes are most common in the middle and lower spine.

Schmorl's nodes are common, especially with minor degeneration of the aging spine. Schmorl's nodes usually cause no symptoms, but reflect that "wear and tear" of the spine has occurred over time. Schmorl's nodes are a helpful x-ray finding as an indicator of degenerative process that may be affecting a patient's spine.
