Sciatica?

by BethanySublime, Apr 16, 2007 12:00AM
Hi,

I'm wondering if my lower back pain could be sciatica.  It starts at the top of my pelvic bone on the left (halfway between my side & spine).  It comes on as a quick pain that feels like just before your back cracks, and locks there for a second.  Then sometimes I feel burning pain go down to the top of my left leg, really deep inside.  But the pain doesn't travel down my whole leg, just to the top of the thigh.  It started a couple weeks ago and has been getting bad fast.  I'm starting to limp a little when I walk.  I had slight scoliosis last I was checked, which was probably about 6 years ago (I'm 19 female) - could that be the cause of my pain?

Thanks,
Bethany

Hi Bethany,
The pain you are describing might be sciatica but it is equally likely that it is pain from the femoral nerve. Sciatica is referred pain from the sciatic nerve which feeds mostly the back of the thigh and the lower leg. The femoral nerve feeds most of the front of the thigh from your hip to below the groin and above the knee. The femoral nerve pain is usually due to upper-mid lumbar problems, it can also be due to a tight psoas muscle. this muscle is the one that allows you to bring your knee to your chest. If it is tight you will know it and will feel hunched over and have a hard time extending your leg back behind you on that side. Your problem could also be due, of course, to your scoliosis. In short, try to get in and see your local osteopathic physician and see if you can get some help.
