Should I be worried?

by Aaron85, Jul 01, 2009 10:06PM
I'm a 23 year old male who was on active duty in the military.  On duty I hurt my back lifting some bags and had constant pain in my lower back and down my right leg for about a year and a half before having surgery.  I had a lumbar laminectomy about 7 months ago (the pain is still signifigent but reduced about 10% of the pre surgery pain) and now the my pointer finger on my right hand has been twitching almost every day for a few minutes here and there.  Doesnt seem to be anything that triggers it that I know of yet.  I was just wondering if this could be related to my spine injury or the surgery and if i should be worried.  Thanks!

Generally speaking the twitching of your finger would not be related to having had lumbar surgery or any injury to your lumbar spine,
Symptoms of the upper extremity are more likely to originate from the cervical spine if related to a disc or nerve problem.
If it persists and occurs without any associated reason, it would be helpful to mention it to your doctor and see if further evaluation is needed.
Your recovery from the laminectomy is progressing slowly.  Have you begun any physical therapy or other rehab program to strengthen your low back?  It may be that because your symptoms were present for over a year prior to surgery that you are slow in achieving more pain relief,  Discuss therapy options with your doctor and see if you can begin increasing your activity level without risk of complications.
Best wishes ---
