Terrible morning back pain: Did I find a solution? Please explain this to me.

Hello,

For the past few months I have been waking up with terrible back pain in the morning.  It felt more internal than anything else.  There was no tenderness, no swelling, no sharp pains, etc. It simply felt like somone was beating me with a baseball bat all night. It hurt to take deep breaths. I couldnt get more than 5 or 6 hours of sleep. I'm a pretty fit person, 26yr old male, athletic, always exercising, so I was confused.  After being up for 2 or more hours, the pain was completley gone.

I changed beds, tried memory foam pads, special pillows, nothing worked.

Then I realized that some mornings I was fine, but I couldnt put my finger on it.  I finally found out what might be causing my morning back pain.  Beer????

I usually come home from work and through the course of the night have a couple beers.  The past few days I stopped drinking beer and what do you know....NO BACK PAIN IN THE MORNING!

So, please, can somone explain this?  Is it the alcohol, the carbonation, or what?  Is it just a coincidence?  Has anyone ever heard of alcohol or beer causing morning back pain?

Thanks,
Ken

I don't drink anything anymore for years now but I get the pain in the morning also. It is kind of a hit or miss thing. Most mornings its there but then some mornings I find I can roll around without the pain. I know when it is there, it wakes me up cause I can hardly breath. It is a struggle just to get out of bed when it hurts like that. Hard to explain. Once I am up moving slowly around it goes away. Some days it takes much longer for it to go away though. Had to call off work already for this because I just couldn't get around enough to get ready.
Best Wishes.

I had the same thought about beer, I have been having the same pain, early morning only. Then once I'm up, the pain gradually goes away. I too, thought it was beer but one night I had a few and I felt fine as far as the back pain. After trial and error several times, I thought I felt worse the better I slept, when I have a sleepless night, tossing and turning, it seems like I have less pain in the am.
Is the 'no beer' still working for you? I was just on vacation, had a few drinks each night, never had pain in the morning. I came home, went to bed and had horrible pain that morning...I just don' t get it. I wish there was an answer.

Any alcoholic beverage can dehydrate as well as put tension in your muscles. I can't remember the name of it off hand, but alcohol keeps people from going into or in a certain phase of "real sleep" or "rest". So those nights you don't drink your body is getting what it needs. If you decide to continue to have a few beers before bed, try to drink at least 8oz if not more of water before bed. I found in the past when I used to drink that it helped ALOT.
