Uncontrollable Violent Leg and Back Spasms W/Disc Bulges at L4-5, L5-S1, T11-12

by NoRoom4TheMeek, Oct 12, 2007 02:59PM
So at work I had a couple of injuries at work where I was trying to catch something heavy as it was falling and my back gave out. Since the last injury(9/4/07) I have developed these strange muscle jerks in my leg and back. They are completely involuntary, like a hickup, and seem to get worse when pressure is applied to my back whether from just walking our trying to stand straight up. I only get relief when I prop my back up just under my neck and my legs up, knees bent, taking pressure off my spine. It is now 10/12/07 and I don't feel that I'm getting any better and it doesn't seem like I have any certain diagnosis to what is causing the jerking of my legs and lower back.

Xrays seemed fine other than mild scoliousis.

However, I got an MRI of my spine.
Here are the results:

-disc bulge at L4-5 with a small annular fissuring at the superior border of the Sharpie fibers.
-also a disc bulge at L5-S1 centrally. No evidence to suggest significant neural tissue encroachment.
-at the T11 and T12 level there is a bulging disc bordering on protrusion which effaces the anterior epidural space and nearly abuts the anterior spinal cord. No spinal cord signal intensity alterations or morphologic abnormallity seen.

I've been to a neurosurgeon, he said that he could see no evidence why the T11-T12 bulge could cause the major twitching and leg jerking that I'm having.

Right now it feels like I have a major toothache in my back and when the pain resonates my right leg or back jumps.

I've been keeping a journal so I'll just list some of my symptoms(sorry if i repeat):
-Severe pain in mid back
-when pressure is relieved I get an euphoric itching sensation in my back, twitching still happens.
-pain resonates back and forth through lower back.
-can't lay on stomach because twitching is too prominent.
-My legs jerk worse when pressure is applied to T11-T12 area.
-when my GF lays sits on my bottom and pushes up on the vertabrae above the T11-T12. My waste jerks so bad that it pushes her up.
-after sitting for awhile legs and feet sometimes go week & numb and I get a cooling sensation. This seems to get better if I pull up on the vertabrae above T11-T12.
-If I don't take smaller than normal steps the twitching gets worse and so does the pressure on my back.
-when the pain's bad it feels like a balloon is expanding in my back. Pressure builds and builds until I'm hunched over in pain. At this point I'm having violent twitching. Can't even stand to sit up. As soon as I try to sit or lay on the T11-T12 area of my back the back twitching starts up violently. Leg twitching becomes worse also.
-I have clusters of muscle spasms in my back around the T11-T12 area.
-Leg twitching seems to be sympathetic to muscle spasms in my waste.
-no unusual symptoms from the T11-T12 region up. no loss of strength in arms, shoulders, neck...

Prescriptions currently taking:
I took a weeks worth of MethylPREDNISolone 4mg/21 tablets(no difference)
A shot of Toradol(little difference in uncomfortableness, no difference in twitching)
Ultram 50mg(liittle to no help with pain, makes me ill, stopped taking)
Neurotin 300mg 4 times a day (helps with pain and twitching)
Prozac 20mg(unrelated to injury)
Naproxen 250 mg 2 every four hours(helps sometimes with pain and pressure)
Ativan .5mg(haven't started taking yet, wanted to research injury)

New Event:

I haven't been laying on my side because the pain made it uncomfortable. But I tried the other night & when I tried to relax the part of my back with the most tension, I fealt like I got shocked. My lower body jerked violently for about 10 seconds. If anyone has any clues of has seen anything like this please help... So far no doctors say they've seen this before...
