Uncontrollable lower back pain

I suffer with degeneration of the disk disease, therefore I am used to a little discomfort from time to time, however.  Five days ago the discomfort feeling turned nasty; I have increased & unbearable chronic lower back pain, shooting pain down to my ankle, I cannot stand for no longer than 5 seconds without wanting to collapse and die, I have been laying down on the floor for 5 days; from morning to afternoon and from afternoon to night, all the way to the morning, it is groundhog day.

I am on Ibuprofen, diazepam & cocodine but I feel that I am swallowing these pills for fun. I have tried other tablets and anti-imflamatory tablets such as Diclofenac, Paracetamol and Tramadol but none seem to work.  I have been on tablets like these for 7 years now but my pain is uncontrollable, even with the use of a Tens machine.

I have been to the hospital, they shrugged me off with pain killers and crutches..

I now am starting to get a little discomfort in my stomach along with everything else..

Other than jump off the nearest cliff, what else can I do to get rid of this unbearable pain?

Just joined tonight. I feel for you and totally understand where you are coming from. I often say to my wife that they can make itty bitty phones and travel in space but when it comes to back pain we are lost.
1. I wanted to say you are not alone even though it feels like it. I bet you are low on sleep and probably not eating well because of the pain. Both of these are very important in helping your body and mind heal.
2. I also wanted to say that a marriage is a partner ship. Yes this is a very special time in your wifes life and also very stressful. Has she actually said she was thinking of leaving or is this how you think she feels. I know I beat myself up alot and am very negative when my pain levels are high. Be empathetic to her feeling what you can't give her in physical support try to give her in emotional support. Just listen.
3. What the others said is VERY true Meds. and different therapies are very important. You have got to get pain control (and sleep) then I will bet you the world will look a whole lot different.

I know what you mean about feeling blown off by the doctors. I would suggest you don't deal with emergency doctors unless you absolutely need to. They are very used to having alot of medication seekers come in and I think after a while that is all they can see. When a person says "my back is killing me." They hear "GIVE ME DRUGS" it is sad. People who have real pain are often lost in there. I have babbled on long enough. I am always hear to listen and talk. I know I am on this site in hopes to find some answers and others who are dealing with some of the same issues.

hey, I feel for you as I know the pain your in, get a doctor to do an MRI and see what is wrong, I had to have a spinal fusion that was 5 months ago and the pain isn't all gone, but I can live at least now.
be careful of the patch, I was on that all last summer till last february and went through withdrawals going off of it. you really do need to get whatever is wrong fixed.
good luck with that new baby, I hope your wife gives you support, I know she is in need right now too, but I also know you do too, get some help, for all of you.

Did not realise that this was an 'expert' site as only just joined this site yesterday so forgive me but this guy no response to his needs.

Ashman, alternative therapies:- hydrotherapy, acupuncture, massage, hypnotherapy and meditation .

There's lots of good pain management work being carried out in the UK but you need to access it first.

Good luck.

Not Shrugging you off, only just joined and know exactly how you feel because I've been there.

I have a different condition to you but suffer with chronic back and leg pain so can honestly say I understand. I've actually been diagnosed with Chronic Pain Syndrome!

Let's get you a plan.

Firstly you need a good doctor. I think looking at your meds you are not seeing a PAIN MANAGEMENT SPECIALIST? Th combination is a classic GP medication combo and a bad one. It is not going to help someone with nerve pain at the end of their tether. The problem is that GPs do not see enough of chronic pain.

Meds
Heard of AMITRIPTYLINE? This might be your first choice and it may work either on its own OR in conjunction with other medications. You really do need to be seeing PAIN MANAGEMENT DR so ensure you are referred as soon as possible. There will be a waiting list sadly so get yourself clued up and take control of your care. Find the best GP in the practice and tell him/her which drugs you want to try. Tell him/her that you have done your research and you NEED that particular drug and if need be take in some back-up information.
Obviously ALL drugs have side effects an most of them wear off in time. Amitrptyline always leaves you tired if I'm honest. I've been on a dose of 10mgs up to 75mgs and now I'm on 25mgs if I feel OK and can up it to 35mgs if I'm not so good. Apparently the extra 10mgs should not work as quickly as it does according to my GP but it does and it works for a friend like this who also has the same condition as you too. She also takes Tramadol, Celebrex and MST which I will talk about shortly.

Next we have GABAPENTIN, TOPIRAMATE, PREGABALIN
These are Anti Seizure medications and fantastic if you have burning or electric shock like pains. Pregablin is the newest one on the market and I tried that one for a while but even though it is supposed to have the least side effects, I had the most? That said it helped with the pain the most of all the meds I have taken.

DIHYDROCODEINE
This also may be a good option for you as it is not as strong as morphine but stronger than paracetamol - A LOT STRONGER! It contains 30mgs of Dihydrocodeine per tablet and worked for quite some time for me. Sadly it stopped after a couple of years and I've had to move on to stronger stuff

OPIOIDS
Now the 'hard stuff' MORPHINE, HYDROMORPHINE, ORAMORTH, OXYCODONE,  FENTANYL and METHADONE. There's also a patch and drug which is synthetic called Bupronorphine and brilliant and available in the UK for pain relief. It was my godsend for a long time but alas I was allergic to the patch and the tablet was not strong enough and I had to move on to morphine. I used to be terrified at the thought of taking morphine. I'm 38 and a mother of two but I function as well as I did before my pain issues. The only thing that slows me down is my pain!

I'm happy to talk to you in private and I've listed the meds above because apart from TOPIRAMATE, I think your GP will be aware of some of the names and he/she should give you a suitable prescription. Rome wasn't built in a day though and it is trial and error. What works for one person does not work for all. You will need to do some research and I appreciate that sitting at a computer is not easy. If you want help with doses then send me a message.

I totally sympathise. I've been on this road for eight years now and while I've had a bad winter I feel so much better now and hope I can help you to help yourself.

Why is it that everyone shrugs me off????  Even this forum now!

I think I would get a quicker response from God than from doctors and I have been asking God questions since I was 3 years old!

I am in agony, I can't take it anymore, I just want to die so the pain goes away yet I try to be strong and no one is helping me.

My wife is due to give birth within the next 4 weeks,I can't even stand up and it looks like we are heading for divoirce as she says that she cannot look after me and that she is pregnant and I should be looking after her right now.. and you know what? she is right!

What can I do?  just lay here like a vegetable every day.

I feel useless.

How come we can send man on the moon, design artificial limbs that can move through brain thought alone yet no one is bothering to look into a cure for slipped discs????

Nex time I have to take pain killers I am going to take them all!
