Waking feeling compressed

Waking feeling compressed

I'm a 32 year old male, not in terrific condition, but solidly built.  I work as a shipper and do a lot of heavy lifting.  I try hard to lift properly and rarely feel any back or muscle pain at work.  My bed is only a year old and normally comfortable, but over the last several weeks I've been waking up feeling as though my upper chest and back(mostly back, though) are compressed.  I assume this has something to do with my bed, but in the meantime is there a way I can sleep to help prevent this sensation?  What might be wrong?

Spinal compression is common especially if you frequently do a lot of heavy lifting.  You may try to stretching your back before bed by getting on all fours and stretching like a cat.  I know it sounds silly but it really is a great excercise.  Bend your spine up at the abdomen (make a bridge with your back).  Sink your back back down and repeat about 10 times.  Then slide your gluts back so that your chest is slowly lowered to the ground.  Raise back up to all fours and repeat 10 times.  Do this every night before bed and when you wake up in the morning.

If the problem still persists, you could see either a physical therapist or chiropractor for Traction or Spinal Decompression.  The latter treatment is more effective and is performed by a chiropractor.  They will put you on a traction table or on a spinal decompression machine that will stretch both ends of your body in opposite directions.  This will alleviate the pressure of the vertebrae on the discs in your spine.  Typically at least 3 treatments are needed to feel substantial relief.  However, you should feel some relief after the first treatment.
