broken c6 now healed

My 20 year old son was in a car accident 10 weeks ago.. he broke his c6 and was put in a neck brace for 6 weeks. had new xrays, bone was not completely healed and the neck looked unstable.. 3 weeks later new flex xrays show the bone is healed, but the soft tissue that keeps the neck straight is not healing.  The neurosurgeon recommends surgery. My son, and I, do not want to fuse things together at this point.. We are seeking other opinions, but it seems that surgeons recommend surgery. we are looking for alternatives to strengthen his neck to offer more healing. at this time, he is still in the neck brace, which stabilizes the neck for him.. Any ideas of who to go to, what to ask would be greatly appreciated... We are int he phx, Az area

I would keep asking questions and keep a record of all the responses you receive from each and every doctor.  Good luck with your search for answers.  Take your time to decide and make sure he is 100% for the course of action you take or he will regret it later.
